Kerry Reiterates US Commitment to Egypt by VOA News U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says the United States remains a committed friend and partner to Egypt, despite the suspension of some aid to the military-backed government that took over from an elected Islamist president. Kerry made the pledge Sunday during a joint press conference in Cairo with his Egyptian counterpart Nabil Fahmy. His visit to Egypt comes one day before the start of the trial of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, who was removed from power by the military in July and charged with inciting the killing of protesters demonstrating outside the presidential palace in December. The Obama administration has frozen some of its annual $1.3 billion in military aid to Egypt because of the bloodshed and political turmoil. Kerry's stopover in Egypt is the first of his nine-day diplomatic mission to the Middle East and Europe. Kerry travels to Saudi Arabia later Sunday for talks with Saudi leaders about Egypt, the Syrian civil war and negotiations over Iran's nuclear program. His other stops include Bethlehem, where he will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. He will also visit Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Morocco and Poland. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/kerry-reiterates-us-committment-to-eg ypt/1782321.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/kerry-reiterates-us-committment-to-egypt/1782321.html
