New US Sanctions Target Iran's Currency by VOA News President Barack Obama has signed off on new U.S. sanctions against Iran, targeting its already shaky currency, the rial. The White House says it will impose sanctions on foreign banks and others who knowingly buy or sell large amounts of the rial. It also has imposed sanctions on banks that hold large accounts in the rial. The U.S. also will sanction those who sell parts that Iran can use to build cars, trucks and other vehicles, and on those who provide material support to Iranian officials already targeted by earlier U.S. sanctions. These new sanctions are part of Obama's commitment to stop Iran from building a nuclear weapon - a charge it denies - and Iran's failure to meet its international obligations. The White House again said the door is open to a diplomatic solution with Iran. It warns of increasing consequences if Iran continues down its current path of defiance. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/us-sanctions-iran-currency/1674510.ht ml References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/us-sanctions-iran-currency/1674510.html
