Protesters Take to the Streets After Zimmerman Verdict Thousands of demonstrators held noisy rallies late Sunday in several U.S. cities to protest a Florida jury`s acquittal of neighborhood-watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Treyvon Martin. Peaceful demonstrations in cities including New York, San Francisco, Boston, Detroit and Chicago called for justice in the face of what protesters saw as a race-based verdict. At least six people were arrested Monday in Los Angeles when riot police broke up an "unlawful assembly" near the Cable News Network building. U.S. President Barack Obama appealed for calm and quiet reflection Sunday, saying "we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken." For months, the case dominated television news and the Internet, raising the national debate about race and crime fighting in America. The 17-year-old Martin - an African American - was killed last year in a struggle with Zimmerman, who is Hispanic. The death left many Americans saying Martin was targeted because he was black. Zimmerman said he acted in self-defense after he was physically assaulted by Martin. The U.S. Justice Department said Sunday it is evaluating evidence in the case to determine whether to pursue prosecution of Zimmerman under federal statutes. The Department would have to establish Zimmerman was motivated by racial animosity, even though race was barely mentioned in the Florida trial. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/protesters-take-to-the-streets-after- zimmerman-verdict/1701776.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/protesters-take-to-the-streets-after-zimmerman-verdict/1701776.html
