Deadly Arizona Wildfire Now 8% Contained Arizona fire officials say the Yarnell Hill fire that killed 19 firefighters on Sunday is now eight percent contained. They said firefighters were able to make progress against the fast-moving blaze when powerful winds died down. About 500 firefighters, as well as military air tankers and helicopters, are battling the fire that has burned 8,400 acres so far and forced the evacuation of hundreds of homes. On Sunday, sudden winds swept flames over 19 firefighters in the deadliest single day for U.S. firefighters since September 11, 2001. The only surviving member of the Granite Mountain Hotshots has been identified as a 21-year-old man who was working away from the rest of his team when the wind shifted and cut off their escape route. The fire was started by a lightning hit on Friday. Arizona, and the neighboring western states of California and Nevada are in the middle of an extreme heat wave. Temperatures have reached record highs, and excessive heat warnings are in effect across the region. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/deadly-arizona-wildfire-now-8-contain ed/1694064.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/deadly-arizona-wildfire-now-8-contained/1694064.html
