Fighting Continues in Syrian Capital Rebels opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad are battling with government security forces in the capital, Damascus, for a second straight day. Activists say the fighting Thursday is focused in the eastern and southern parts of the city, and includes heavy shelling by Syrian forces. The state-run SANA news agency also reported what it said were "terrorists" firing mortar shells on a garage in a northern neighborhood, causing several casualties. The government frequently uses the term "terrorists" to describe the rebels. Fierce fighting broke out in Damascus on Wednesday, with the rebel Free Syrian Army saying it had launched an operation to "liberate" the city. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than 170 people died in fighting across the country Wednesday. The crisis in Syria began in March 2011, and since then the United Nations says more than 60,000 people have died. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/fighting-continues-in-syrian-capital/ 1598845.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/fighting-continues-in-syrian-capital/1598845.html
