Nigeria Says Troops Kill 50 Militants After Barracks Attack Nigeria`s military says its soldiers have killed at least 50 Islamist militants in an operation to track down those who carried out a deadly attack on an army barracks in the country`s northeast. Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Chris Olukolade said Tuesday that 15 soldiers and five civilians were killed during that attack Friday in Bama. The town is in Borno state, one of the areas where the Nigerian government has declared a state of emergency and sent more soldiers to battle the Islamists. The militant group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for an attack on a Nigerian military base earlier this month in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno. Boko Haram is believed to be fighting for an Islamic state in northern Nigeria, and is blamed for thousands of deaths since it began its uprising in 2009. Human rights groups have accused the military of using indiscriminate and heavy-handed violence in its crackdown. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/nigeria-says-troops-kill-50-militants -after-barracks-attack/1816455.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/nigeria-says-troops-kill-50-militants-after-barracks-attack/1816455.html
