UN Envoy Accuses Burma of Failing to Protect Him A U.N. human rights envoy has accused the Burmese government of failing to protect him during his tour of a town hit by religious unrest between Buddhists and Muslims. Before leaving Rangoon after a 10-day tour of Burma, Tomas Ojea Quintana expressed his displeasure with the Burmese government. "The State has to protect me as a responsibility. This did not happen. The state failed to protect me," he said. No one is believed to have been injured when his convoy was attacked on August 19 in the town of Meiktila. Although upset with the attack on his convoy, Quintana said he was happy to see people being able to speak their minds, even when he disagreed with their position. "I visited Rakhine for the fourth time. I was greeted by many locals who were protesting my visit. Although this was not a message I liked to hear, I welcomed that people were able to stand in public and express their views," he said. During his tour of Rakhine state last week, Quintana visited camps for displaced Rohingya Muslims. He called on them to organize to help find a peaceful solution to the violence. He also met with members of the Rakhine Buddhist community as well as senior officials in the state government. Violence between Muslims and Buddhists in Rakhine state last year killed more than 200 people and left 140,000 homeless. Last week a clash between police and members of the Rohingya community left at least one dead and several injured. State government spokesman U Hla Thein told VOA there is a plan in place to rebuild trust between the Buddhist and Muslim communities. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/un-envoy-accuses-burma-of-failing-to- protect-him/1734057.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/un-envoy-accuses-burma-of-failing-to-protect-him/1734057.html
