Arab Bedouin of Israel's Negev Desert Around 200,000 Bedouins live in the Negev Desert of Israel, all of them Israeli citizens and most of them concentrated in an area around the city of Beersheva. They lived under military rule until the 1960's and have since resisted government attmpts to move them into seven larger, recognized towns. The Bedouin live in dozens of unrecognized settlements across the northern Negev; the state says these settlements are illegal and refuses to provide them with running water, electricity, roads, health care and other municipal services. The Israeli Interior Ministry carries out house demolitions and takes other sanctions against the Bedouin, who say that their traditional way of life and tribal society structure is being eroded. If the proposed Prawer-Begin law is passed, as many as 40,000 Bedouins will be forcibly removed from their homes. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/media/photogallery/1724441.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/media/photogallery/1724441.html
