                  Australia's Rudd Calls September 7 Election

   Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has called a general election for
   September 7.
   At the beginning of a five-week election campaign, Mr. Rudd said the
   economy can no longer rely on Chinese demand for iron ore and coal to
   avoid a recession during the global economic downturn. He said the
   election will be about who the people trust to steer the economy
   through the economic transition that lies ahead.
   Current public opinion polls indicate conservative opposition leader
   Tony Abbott is a favorite to win power, but online surveys show that
   voters prefer Mr. Rudd.
