Officials Break Up Poll Protest in Guinea by VOA News Security forces in Guinea's capital fired tear gas Thursday to break up an opposition protest related to upcoming elections. The government says the trouble began when protesters veered off the authorized march route. Officials claim some of the protesters threw rocks at security forces, who responded with tear gas at two main intersections. At least two people were hospitalized with injuries, while several others were arrested. The government says it has deployed 4,000 police and troops to maintain order. Thousands of opposition supporters took part in Thursday's march to protest what it calls a lack of transparency in the organization of the legislative polls. Moctar Diallo, head of the opposition New Democratic Forces, said conditions for free and fair elections have not been met and the way the government is organizing the polls violates election laws. The opposition will continue to protest until there is full transparency, said Diallo. The government accuses the opposition of making unreasonable demands and holding up elections. The vote, which has been delayed since 2011, is meant to be the last step in a drawn out transition to civilian rule following a military coup in 2008. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/guinea-protest-broken-up-with-tear-ga s/1644159.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/guinea-protest-broken-up-with-tear-gas/1644159.html
