Musarraf Barred From Pakistan's Elections Judges have disqualified Pervez Musharraf from contesting Pakistan`s elections next month, a decision that comes weeks after the former military ruler returned from self-imposed exile to make a political comeback. Last week, a judge in the remote northern district of Chitral gave Musharraf approval to run in the May 11 parliamentary election, despite the fact that three other districts had disqualified him. Local lawyers challenged that decision, and on Tuesday, a three-judge panel overturned it. Musharraf`s legal team has vowed to appeal the decision to Pakistan`s Supreme Court. Musharraf is barred from running for parliament because of his actions suspending Pakistan`s constitution while he was in power. He also is currently out on bail for those actions, as well as for his alleged involvement in the 2007 assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto. Musharraf seized power in a military coup in 1999 and ruled for nearly a decade before he was forced to step down in 2008. Since his return to Pakistan after four years of self-imposed exile, Musharraf`s election campaign has been marred by lackluster public support and Taliban death threats. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/musarraf-barred-from-pakistans-electi ons/1642448.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/musarraf-barred-from-pakistans-elections/1642448.html
