US Military Chief in Afghanistan The top U.S. military officer has made a previously unannounced visit to Afghanistan to assess the number of U.S. troops to leave behind to train the Afghan army after the U.S. completes its troop drawdown at the end of 2014. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey arrived in Afghanistan Saturday to meet with U.S. and Afghan officials and talk with soldiers in the field. The United States has promised to reduce the number of troops in Afghanistan by the end of 2014, after a high of some 100,000 troops in past years. It is not clear yet how many soldiers will be left to assist the Afghan army in handling the country`s still-volatile security situation. Experts speculate the number will be between 6,000 and 20,000 U.S. troops. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/us-military-chief-in-afghanistan/1636 016.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/us-military-chief-in-afghanistan/1636016.html
