Desperate Search Follows Deadly Indian Building Collapse Rescue workers are continuing to search through the rubble, pulling out survivors almost a day after the collapse of an illegally-built building outside India's commercial capital. Police say at least 46 people, including 11 children, died late Thursday when the eight-story building in the Mumbai suburb of Thane gave way. Mirza Mahmood was in the building when it fell. "I was lying down in the room, and suddenly felt a jolt, and when I tried to get up, a slab fell on me," Mahmood said. "I can only remember this much, not anything else." Rescue officials say at least 70 people were injured and that more survivors may still be trapped. Most of the dead and injured were construction workers and their families staying in unfinished parts of the building. Local residents and officials say the building was quickly constructed on protected forest land. Local police commissioner K.P. Raghuvanshi confirmed the structure was built illegally. Investigators are looking for the builders, who will be charged with culpable homicide. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/search-for-survivors-follows-deadly-i ndian-building-collapse/1635702.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/search-for-survivors-follows-deadly-indian-building-collapse/1635702.html
