Commission Set Up to Probe Gang Rape in India by VOA News Indian authorities have launched a special investigation intothe gang-rape and brutal beating of a 23-year-old medical student, an attack that sparked widespread protests. Government spokesman - Finance Minister P. Chidambaram - announced Wednesday that a judicial commission had been set up to review the police response to the December 16 attack in New Delhi. He said the panel will also suggest ways to make the city safer for women. The student who was attacked remains hospitalized in critical condition. Investigators say the woman and a male friend were given a ride on a chartered bus. A group of men on the bus raped and beat her with an iron rod and then threw her from the bus. Police have arrested six alleged attackers. Meanwhile, demonstrators across India have been urging the government to take more steps to address crimes against women. At a Wednesday protest, Congress Party provincial unit district president P.C. Sharma said lawlessness against women has become widespread. "In the last nine years, over 27,000 rapes cases have surfaced in the state. Over 56,000 women have been teased and 36,000 are reportedly missing," said Sharma. "Almost nine women are raped on a daily basis, out of which two are gang raped." On Tuesday, a constable responding to a protest died in a New Delhi hospital. Authorities initially said he was attacked by a mob that clashed with police. However, witnesses said Wednesday that the officer was not attacked but appeared to have collapsed on his own. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/commission-set-up-to-probe-gang-rape- in-india/1572266.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/commission-set-up-to-probe-gang-rape-in-india/1572266.html
