Americans Pay Tribute to Hawaii's Daniel Inouye by VOA News U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has remembered his former Senate colleague, Hawaii's Daniel Inouye, as a remarkable war hero and a distinguished, highly respected lawmaker. Biden, who was a senator from Delaware before becoming vice president, spoke Thursday at the U.S. Capitol, where Inouye's body is lying in state ahead of a funeral on Friday in Washington. Inouye's flag-draped coffin is at the Capitol Rotunda for public viewing. The 88-year-old lawmaker died Monday from respiratory complications. Inouye, a Democrat, had served in Congress since Hawaii became a state in 1959. He was a decorated World War II veteran and Medal of Honor recipient. He had been hospitalized since December 6, when he fainted in his Capitol Hill office. President Barack Obama said Monday the country has "lost a true American hero." At the time of his death, Inouye was the Senate's president pro tempore, the third person in line for the presidency after the vice president and the speaker of the House of Representatives. He also chaired the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee. He served in World War II and lost his right arm in battle in Italy. Inouye was the first Japanese-American elected to Congress. He entered as a representative in 1959 and was reelected in 1960. He was first elected to the Senate in 1962 and was serving his ninth consecutive term. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/americans_pay_tribute_to_hawaiis_dani el_inouye/1569095.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/americans_pay_tribute_to_hawaiis_daniel_inouye/1569095.html
