Tropical Storm Isaac Takes Aim at Hispaniola by VOA News Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to dump heavy rains Friday over Hispaniola, the island shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The [1]U.S. National Hurricane Center says the maximum downpour could be more than 50 centimeters, which could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides. The center says a hurricane watch is in effect for Haiti, a nation still recovering from a devastating 2010 earthquake. The center of Isaac will be near or over Hispaniola on Friday and move near or over southeastern Cuba on Saturday. A storm surge along the Hispaniola coast will raise water levels by more than 60 centimeters above normal tide levels. Organizers of next week's Republican National Convention in Florida are keeping a watchful eye on Isaac. Thousands of people are expected to attend the four-day meeting, in the city of Tampa. Forecasters say Isaac's path is uncertain at this point, but the storm could strike Florida as early as Monday. __________________________________________________________________ [2]http://www.voanews.com/content/tropical-storm-isaac-takes-aim-at-his paniola/1494874.html References 1. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ 2. http://www.voanews.com/content/tropical-storm-isaac-takes-aim-at-hispaniola/1494874.html
