Assad Appears in Public for Eid Prayers by VOA News Syrian President Bashar al-Assad joined prayers at a Damascus mosque Sunday for the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, a three-day holiday marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. It was Assad's first public appearance since a bombing in the Syrian capital last month that killed the country's defense minister and three other top security officials. Elsewhere in Syria, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that violent clashes were continuing between rebel fighters and government forces. The group also said that thousands of people across the country were holding protests in mosques and cemeteries, calling for the ouster of President Assad. On Saturday, activists said the military carried out air raids on rebel-held areas in the country, including the border town of Azaz in the northern region of Aleppo, where more than 40 people were killed in an attack on Azaz earlier in the week. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/assad-appears-in-public-for-eid--pray ers/1490978.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/assad-appears-in-public-for-eid--prayers/1490978.html
