Syrian Military Assault on Protesters Leads to More Deaths

   More deaths have been reported in Syria as the government's violent
   assault on anti-government protesters continues.
   Most of the deaths occurred in the central Syrian city of Homs where at
   least three people died on Sunday. It is the fifth consecutive day in
   what anti-government activists say is an ongoing military campaign
   against the city, considered the center of opposition in the
   seven-month-long uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.
   Sunday's deaths added to the scores who have been killed in Homs in
   recent weeks. They came on the first day of the Muslim Eid al-Adha
   festival and just days after the Assad government signed on to an Arab
   League peace plan in which the government agreed to end its violent
   crackdown against the uprising.
   The head of the Arab League, Nabil al-Arabi, has deplored the violence
   and is warning of "catastrophic consequences" for the country and the
   region if the violence does not end.
