Pakistan Says US Drone Strike Killed 8 Militants VOA News May 06, 2011 File photo of a Predator drone unmanned aerial vehicle Photo: AP File photo of a Predator drone unmanned aerial vehicle Pakistan officials say a U.S. drone missile strike has killed eight suspected militants near the Afghan border. Authorities say the attack Friday targeted a compound in the tribal district of North Waziristan. The drone strike was the first one in Pakistan since U.S. forces killed Osama bin Laden during a Monday raid on a compound in Abbottabad, not far from Islamabad. U.S. drone strikes against militants based in Pakistan's tribal belt have been a source of friction between the two countries. U.S. officials do not acknowledge the missile strikes. The Pakistani government publicly condemns the drone strikes as undermining its sovereignty, but regional experts say Islamabad privately coordinates with the U.S. government on selecting targets. Also Friday, police say gunmen have opened fire on a group of Shi'ites, killing at least five people in the southwestern city of Quetta in Baluchistan province. Officials say the Shi'ites were attacked Friday while exercising in a park. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Baluchistan province is rife with Islamist militancy and sectarian violence between majority Sunnis and minority Shi'ite Muslims. .
