The official, Qayoum Pakhla, said the blast happened Tuesday in Kandahar province as the truck was carrying the laborers to work. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. NATO said in a statement it joins President Hamid Karzai in condemning the killing and wounding of innocent workers. Also Tuesday, police in Kabul say a suicide car bomber tried to attack Ahmad Ziad, the deputy head of Afghanistan's intelligence agency. Officials said the attacker was shot before he could detonate his explosives, and Ziad was unharmed. The Afghan Taliban recently stepped up attacks against NATO and Afghan troops, civilians and government officials, mainly in southern and eastern Afghanistan. NATO also said a coalition aircraft crashed Tuesday in western Afghanistan, but no one on board was injured. .
