Anti-Government Protesters Wounded in Yemen VOA News May 14, 2011 A police trooper mans a machine gun atop an armored personnel carrier near the Presidential Palace in Sana'a, Syria, May 13, 2011 Photo: Reuters A police trooper mans a machine gun atop an armored personnel carrier near the Presidential Palace in Sana'a, Syria, May 13, 2011 Witnesses say snipers have opened fire on anti-government protesters in Yemen, wounding at least seven people. The incident took place in the southern city of Taiz on Saturday, a day after President Ali Abdullah Saleh rebuffed opposition demands for his immediate resignation. He told supporters in Sana'a he had no immediate plans of leaving his post. Saleh also urged the opposition to stop "playing with fire." He said the Yemeni military would not stand by "idly." As he spoke, thousands of opponents rallied in the capital and elsewhere in Yemen. Witnesses said at least three people were killed and about a dozen others wounded after security forces opened fire on demonstrators. In April, Saleh refused to sign an agreement brokered by the Gulf Cooperation Council. The plan called for him to transfer power to a deputy in exchange for immunity for prosecution. Saleh said he would not sign the agreement in his capacity as president but would only sign as leader of the ruling General People's Congress party.
