Witnesses say security officials fired tear gas and warning shots on Tuesday at inmates at a prison in Sana'a.  The unrest at the facility began late Monday. Prisoners demanding reforms set blankets and mattresses on fire, and announced they were joining the country's anti-government protest movement. Meanwhile, activists calling for President Ali Abdullah Saleh's resignation rallied across the country on Tuesday. Tens of thousands of protesters called for an end to his rule in Dhamar province - one of the president's strongholds. Opposition protests also took place in the southern city of Aden and in southern Ibb province. The government stepped up security in Sana'a on Tuesday, deploying military vehicles and extra troops. Sana'a University has been a rallying point for anti-government demonstrators. Mr. Saleh called for national dialogue during a meeting on Monday, but opposition leaders quickly rejected the call. The president has previously stated that he planned to remain in office until his term ends in 2013. .
