Gadhafi: UN Resolution on Libya 'Invalid' VOA News March 19, 2011 Photo: AP This image taken from Libya State TV shows Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, March 15, 2011 Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has sent urgent messages to world leaders, including U.S. President Barack Obama and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, as fighting raged in the rebel stronghold Benghazi.  In a letter read Saturday by a spokesman to reporters in Tripoli, Gadhafi asked President Obama "how would you behave" if a U.S. city was occupied by an outside group. The spokesman said the fighters in Benghazi are members of al-Qaida. Gadhafi told Ban any Western action against Libya would be "clear aggression" and the U.N. resolution authorizing a no-fly zone over Libya is "invalid." The spokesman read the letters shortly after a fighter plane was shot down over Benghazi Saturday and frequent explosions were heard in the area. Smoke could be seen rising from parts of the city. On Friday, Gadhafi declared a cease-fire and said he was ready to open channels of dialogue with the rebel opposition.  Saturday's fighting comes hours before an emergency international summit in Paris where world powers, including the U.S., the U.N., the Arab League and the European Union, will consider a response to the crisis in Libya.  President Obama warned Gadhafi Friday that his forces must stop attacking the Libyan people or face military action. Obama added that the U.S. will not deploy ground troops.  The U.S. leader also said Gadhafi's forces must allow humanitarian supplies to reach civilians.  On Thursday, the U.N. Security Council adopted a resolution authorizing a no-fly zone over the country. Nations participating in the no-fly zone enforcement are deploying ships and planes throughout the region. France's Ambassador to the U.N. Gerard Araud told BBC news that he expected foreign military intervention in Libya within hours of the Paris summit.
