Obama Receiving âMultiple Updatesâ on Egypt Situation Dan Robinson | White House January 30, 2011 President Barack Obama is briefed on events in Egypt by his national security team meeting in the Situation Room of the White House, Washington, DC, January 29, 2011 Photo: AP President Barack Obama is briefed on events in Egypt by his national security team meeting in the Situation Room of the White House, Washington, DC, January 29, 2011 President Barack Obama and his advisers continue to closely monitor the situation in Egypt. With events in Cairo and other cities being broadcast globally on TV screens and on the Internet, the president continues to keep a close watch on developments. A White House aide said President Barack Obama was receiving "multiple updates" from his staff. The aide said Obama would not be holding another meeting with his national security team in the White House Situation Room as he did on Saturday, and was unlikely to issue any new statement. Others in the administration were doing the talking amid the fluid situation in Egypt. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in an appearance on Fox News Sunday, stepped up a call for change in Egypt, while stopping short of calling for President Hosni Mubarak's resignation. The White House also said neither President Obama nor his national security adviser Tom Donilon had spoken with Egypt's ambassador in Washington, Sameh Shoukry. The ambassador told ABC'S This Week program that his country is "going through a difficult time" but stressed Egypt was already on a path to reform before protests began. President Obama left the White House for a couple of hours early Sunday to play basketball at a nearby gymnasium with his daughters, Sasha and Malia, and their friends.
