The anti-apartheid icon, who is 92, left Milpark Hospital and returned to his nearby home Friday. He was admitted to the hospital Wednesday for what his office initially described as routine tests. His hospitalization sparked a flurry of news reports and concern about his health.  Surgeon General Vejaynand Ramlakan said Friday that Mr. Mandela responded very well to treatment and is in stable condition, but that he will be closely monitored. Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said the Nobel Peace Prize winner is in good spirits and was joking with his wife and nurses before being released. Mr. Mandela has a history of health problems, including tuberculosis. His last public appearance was in July, when he appeared at the closing ceremony of the World Cup, waving to the crowd.
