Thousands Protest Against Economic Conditions in Jordan

   Jordanian  protesters hold a giant national flag, as they march during
   a  protest  demanding  the  resignation  of the prime minister and his
   government over price increases and inflation, in Amman, 21 Jan 2011

   Thousands  of  demonstrators  have  taken  to the streets in Jordan to
   protest  against  economic  conditions and demand the prime minister's
   resignation.
   The  protests  in  the capital, Amman, and other cities on Friday come
   after  similar  demonstations  in  Tunis  that resulted in last week's
   ouster of the country's president.
   Chanting demonstrators in Jordan demanded relief from high food prices
   and  accused the government of failing to fight corruption.  Friday's
   protests were among the largest in the country in recent weeks.
   The  demonstrations  were organized by opposition groups.  Organizers
   went  ahead  with  the  protests, despite a pledge from Prime Minister
   Samir al-Rifai on Thursday to raise the salaries of government workers
   and increase pensions for government retirees.
