Thousands of people had gathered at Modibo Keita stadium in Bamako late Monday for the Muslim festival of Maouloud, marking the birth of the prophet Muhammed. Witnesses say a well-known imam, Osman Madani Haidara, was delivering his blessings when the crowd of people surged toward him. At least 64 people were injured in the incident. Last year, 26 people died during a stampede while celebrating the same holiday at a mosque in the city of Timbuktu. .
