Suicide Bomber Kills Shi'ite Pilgrims in Iraq VOA News February 12, 2011 Iraqi officials say a suicide bomber has killed at least 27 Shi'ite pilgrims near the city of Samarra, north of Baghdad. Saturday's bombing came two days after a car bomb killed at least eight Shi'ite pilgrims traveling to Samarra for a religious event commemorating the death of ninth century imam Hassan al-Askari. Thursday's blast near the town of Dujail also wounded at least 39 people. Overall, violence has declined in Iraq from the height of sectarian conflict several years ago. But militants still carry out bombings and shootings almost daily, with Shi'ite pilgrims often the targets.
