Gulf Council to Ask Yemen President to Resign VOA News April 07, 2011 A proposal being put forward by Gulf state mediators to end a political crisis in Yemen will call for the country's long-time president to step down. Sources close to the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council say the plan is to have Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh hand over power to an interim council of tribal and political leaders. Saleh, facing a growing opposition movement calling for his resignation, has accepted an invitation from the Gulf Council to hold talks with opposition representatives. No date has been set for the meeting, which is to take place in Saudi Arabia, and many opposition groups have yet to commit. Tens of thousands of Yemeni protesters staged demonstrations Wednesday in the capital Sana'a and the southern city of Taiz. Saleh has been in power for 32 years. He has previously offered to step down but only after new elections are held. Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
