Protesters Wounded in Yemen Clashes VOA News April 30, 2011 Anti-government protesters carry a fellow protester wounded during clashes with police in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden, April 30, 2011 Photo: Reuters Anti-government protesters carry a fellow protester wounded during clashes with police in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden, April 30, 2011 Witnesses in Yemen say troops opened fire on anti-government protesters in the southern city of Aden, wounding at least 10 people. Witnesses told the Associated Press that Yemeni forces with heavy weapons drove hundreds of anti-government protesters out of a square in al-Mansura neighborhood that they had been camping in for months Saturday, sparking demonstrations. The violence comes as a delegation from the Gulf Cooperation Council visits Yemen to finalize an agreement for the president to step down from power, in an effort to end the ongoing political crisis. Yemen's state news agency Saba reports the GCC Secretary-General Abdullatif al-Zayani will invite Yemen's leadership and opposition to attend an official signing ceremony Monday in Saudi Arabia. The deal, negotiated by the six-nation council, calls for Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to resign within 30 days and to transition power to his vice president. It also would establish a unity government. The deal has divided members of the opposition between those who support the plan and those who say it does not go far enough. Many protesters have demanded the immediate departure of President Saleh, and have objected to a stipulation in the deal granting him and his family immunity from prosecution.
