The clashes happened Monday in the southern city of Taiz, where demonstrators continued calls for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down immediately. The protests come days after Saleh agreed to a Gulf Arab initiative for him to transfer power and resign within 30 days of signing a formal agreement with the opposition. A coalition of seven opposition parties has said it accepts the deal brokered by the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, but will not join a proposed unity government while Saleh is still in office. The agreement would also grant Saleh and his family immunity from prosecution, but protesters have demanded they face trial. Demonstrators have staged more than two months of widespread protests seeking the ouster of Saleh, who has been in power for 32 years.
