Security forces fired on anti-government protesters in Yemen's capital Sunday, April 18, 2011 At least 45 people have been injured in Yemen as security men fired shots and tear gas at protesters demanding the ouster of the country's longtime president. The violence erupted Monday as thousands protested in Yemen's Red Sea port al-Hudaydah, calling for an end to President Ali Abdullah Saleh's 32-year rule. Residents say plainclothes police fired shots while other police used clubs and tear gas against demonstrators, who responded by hurling stones. Violence between pro-Saleh forces and opposition activists has killed more than 116 people since the protests began in late January. On Sunday, Yemeni security forces fired on anti-government protesters in the capital, Sana'a, wounding at least 30 people. Hundreds of thousands demonstrated across the country as opposition leaders met Gulf Arab mediators in Saudi Arabia. Diplomatic efforts to secure Saleh's resignation have stalled. Saleh has given indications he is willing to step down in a orderly transition but the opposition wants his immediate departure. Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
