Egypt's Mubarak Hospitalized Amid Growing Corruption Probe VOA News April 12, 2011 Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak (file photo) Photo: AP Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak (file photo) Egyptian state television says former President Hosni Mubarak has been hospitalized for heart problems. The 82-year-old former leader was taken to a medical facility in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Tuesday, the same day that prosecutors planned to question him in a corruption probe. The Associated Press says pro-democracy activists demonstrated outside of the hospital. Mr. Mubarak was expected to face legal questioning over corruption allegations. Western news organizations quote judicial sources who say his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, are being questioned by authorities Tuesday. On Sunday, the country's public prosecutor summoned Mr. Mubarak concerning a probe into the alleged embezzlement of public funds and the killing of anti-government protesters. The ousted president has said the allegations against him are unfounded, and that he has the right to defend his reputation and that of his family. His remarks were broadcast Sunday by the Al-Arabiya news channel. They were his first public remarks since mass protests forced his departure in February. During the later years of his rule, he had been suffering health problems and had undergone gallbladder surgery and treatment in Germany. Some information for this report was provided by AP and AFP.
