Mr. Chirac is accused of abusing public funds while he was mayor of Paris. He allegedly paid friends with city money for jobs that did not exist. The 77-year-old Mr. Chirac is the first leader in the country's modern history to face corruption charges. He could face up to 10 years in prison and fine of $159,000. .
