Oil Rig Explodes in Gulf of Mexico VOA News 02 September 2010 An oil rig has exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S. Coast Guard says the explosion occurred about 145 kilometers south of Vermilion Bay along the coast of the southern state of Louisiana. The explosion set the rig on fire. A Coast Guard official told CNN Thursday that all 13 crew members reported to be aboard the rig have been located in the water. One is injured and 12 are in immersion suits. The officer said helicopters and boats are on their way to rescue the crew.
