The center of Karl came ashore early Wednesday about 50 kilometers northeast of Chetumal, Mexico. The U.S. [1]National Hurricane Center said the storm has winds of 100 kilometers per hour, and is expected to drop seven to 12 centimeters of rain over the Yucatan, Belize and parts of northern Guatemala.  The storm is expected to cross the peninsula Wednesday and move into the Gulf of Mexico by Thursday. Meanwhile, Hurricane Igor in the Atlantic Ocean is churning waters off the Leeward Islands, and large swells are expected to reach Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Bahamas Wednesday. The hurricane center warns of dangerous surf conditions. Igor remains a Category Four storm on the five-point scale of hurricane intensity, with winds of 230 kilometers per hour. The forecast track shows the storm approaching Bermuda by Sunday. A third storm, Hurricane Julia, strengthened to a Category Four storm on Wednesday, with winds of 215 kilometers per hour as it continues to move west from the Cape Verde Islands.
