U.S. Justice Department officials say 34-year-old Farooque Ahmed had been photographing subway stations around the nation's capital and planning simultaneous bomb attacks. They say he began scouting the sites in April, and that federal investigators had been closely monitoring his activities. Assistant Attorney General for National Security David Kris says the case "underscores the need for continued vigilance against terrorist threats." White House spokesman Robert Gibbs called the arrest an important example of the work being done by U.S. law enforcement to keep the country safe. He said President Barack Obama was aware of the case prior to the arrest. Ahmed, a naturalized American citizen born in Pakistan, has been indicted on three charges, including attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization and planning a terrorist attack on a transit facility. If convicted, he faces a maximum 50 years in prison. Some information for this report was provided by AP. .
