Voting Starts in Pakistan's Karachi After Violence VOA News 17 October 2010 Pakistani people transport an injured riot victim through a hospital in Karachi, 17 Oct 2010 Photo: AFP Pakistani people transport an injured riot victim through a hospital in Karachi, 17 Oct 2010 Voters in Pakistan's southern port of Karachi are casting ballots Sunday in a by-election, following a fresh round of violence that left at least 21 people dead. Police say they have arrested at least 20 suspects in connection with Saturday's killings. Voters are electing a replacement for a provincial lawmaker who was assassinated in August. The shooting death of Raza Haider, a member of the MQM party, sparked four days of violence that killed at least 85 people. MQM largely represents the Urdu-speaking community. The rival ANP party represents ethnic Pashtuns. Both parties blame each other for the violence that erupted after Haider's death. Karachi has been plagued by ethnic and sectarian killings, crime and kidnappings. Â Some information for this report provided by AFP and Reuters. .
