Britain Accuses Iran of 'Slurs,' Following Kurd Arrests

   Britain  accused  Iran of a "long line of slurs" Thursday after Tehran
   said  four  people  arrested for alleged assassinations were part of a
   British-linked Kurdish group.
   Britain's  Foreign and Commonwealth Office said Iran's allegations are
   unfounded.   In  a strongly worded statement, the office said Britain
   does  not support terrorist activities and Iran's claim is "another in
   a long line of slurs" against Britain.
   Earlier  Thursday,  Iran's Intelligence Ministry announced the arrests
   of  four  suspects  with  alleged ties to the armed Kurdish opposition
   group  Komala.   The ministry said investigators believe the suspects
   carried out five assassinations.
   Iran  says  the suspects received orders from a Komala commander named
   Jatil Fattahi, that it believes is living in Britain.
   Komala  has waged a low-level insurgency for decades in Iran's Kurdish
   regions along the border with Iraq.
   Iranian officials said Britain has conducted spy operations and funded
   terror groups against Iran.
   In  a  speech  last  month, the head of Britain's MI6 spy agency, John
   Sawers,  defended  the need for intelligence-led operations to prevent
   states   "like   Iran"   from   developing   nuclear  weapons  against
   international legal obligations.
   Iran's  state-run media says university students gathered in Tehran to
   protest  against  Sawers'  remarks.   It  says  demonstrators chanted
   slogans against the United Kingdom and the United States.
   Iran  says  its  nuclear  program  is  peaceful.  Western powers have
   accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons.
