Report: New Sudan Civil War Could Cost $100 Billion VOA News 25 November 2010 Photo: aegistrust.org A new [1]study says a return to civil war in Sudan would cost more than $100 billion over 10 years. British-based non-governmental group Aegis Trust published a [2]study Thursday that assesses the cost of a resumption of war following January's planned referendum on southern independence. Analysts say the cost to Sudan itself would amount to $50 billion in lost gross domestic product and $25 billion for the neighboring countries. Researchers say the international community would pay $30 billion in peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts. The referendum is set for January 9, with key issues still unresolved, including border demarcation and the future of an oil-rich region in case of secession. The economic analysis for the Aegis report was carried out by the European consulting firm Frontier Economics, with support from the Institute for Security Studies in South Africa and the Society for International Development in Kenya. Some information for this report was provided by AFP.
