Volcanic Ash Delays European Flights For Second Straight Day VOA News 09 May 2010 Photo: ASSOCIATED PRESS The Noepakot and Thorvaldseyri farms are dwarfed by a plume of ash rising from a volcano erupting under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, as seen from Hvolsvollur, Iceland, Wednesday, May 5, 2010 Air traffic in France, northern Italy, Switzerland and Portugal is limited, as ash from an Icelandic volcano disrupts air travel for the second straight day. Meanwhile, several airports in Spain, including in Barcelona, have reopened Sunday. Hundreds of flights were canceled Saturday, as plumes of ash once again blew toward western Europe. Spain closed 19 airports, while flights were also canceled in Portugal. Another ash cloud is hanging over the Atlantic Ocean. Trans-Atlantic flights between Europe and the United States are being rerouted north above Greenland, causing substantial delays. Officials with the European flight control agency, Eurocontrol, warned the ash could spread during the coming days. Volcanic activity has shuttered parts of Europe's airspace on-and-off for more than a month. The European Union says airlines lost more than $3 billion when ash from the same volcano crippled air travel across Europe for nearly a week in April.
