US Economy Creates Most Jobs in Four Years VOA News 07 May 2010 The U.S. economy gained 290,000 jobs in April, the biggest monthly job creation total in four years. Friday's closely watched report from the Labor Department also says the unemployment rate edged up to 9.9 percent. The two-tenths-of-a-percent increase in the unemployment rate is an ironic side-effect of a recent flurry of positive economic reports. Those reports apparently encouraged 805,000 unemployed people to resume their job hunt. In the United States people are only counted as unemployed if they are actively looking for work, so the surge in job-seekers raised the official jobless rate. U.S. President Barack Obama called the job growth "very encouraging news," but also said it will take time and a lot of work to solve the nation's unemployment problems. Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP, Bloomberg and Reuters. .
