Breakaway Lawmakers Form Opposition Party in Botswana VOA News 30 May 2010 Four members of Botswana's parliament have broken away from the ruling Botswana Democratic Party to form an opposition party. The four lawmakers say they can no longer work with a party that does not adhere to democratic principles. The founders of the new party say they expect more than 20 other members of parliament to join them. Political analysts say this could lead to early elections. The Botswana Democratic Party has ruled the southern African country since its independence from Britain in 1966. This is the first split within the party.
