Police used batons to beat some demonstrators. Some protesters threw bottles and other objects at the police. Several hundred opposition activists had gathered to protest against the nearly 30-year rule of President Hosni Mubarak and emergency laws that allow for indefinite detentions. Opposition lawmakers from the Muslim Brotherhood led the demonstrators. The group is officially banned in Egypt but holds a fifth of all parliamentary seats through candidates who ran as independents. There have been a growing number of protests in Egypt calling for constitutional reforms.
