Earthquake Kills 17 People in Eastern Turkey The magnitude 6.0 quake struck early in the morning as people slept. 08 March 2010 A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 has shaken eastern Turkey, killing at least 17 people in several villages. Turkey's Kandilli Observatory says the quake struck the province of Elazig early Monday at 4:32 a.m. local time and was centered near the town of Karakocan. Officials say at least two children were among those killed in the villages of Okcular, Yukari Kanatli and Kayali. They say several other people were trapped in the rubble of collapsed homes. The earthquake and several aftershocks sent residents of the region rushing onto the streets. Earthquakes happen frequently in Turkey, much of which is located on several fault lines.
