2 Would-be Suicide Bombers Killed in Afghanistan

   An  Afghan  official  says security forces killed two would-be suicide
   bombers in southern Helmand province Wednesday.
   Provincial spokesman Dawood Ahmadi says the attackers tried to blow up
   a  compound  in  Helmand's capital of Lashkar Gah used by a U.S.-based
   charity called International Relief and Development.
   Guards  killed the attackers before they could blow themselves up, but
   it was not immediately clear if anyone else was killed or wounded.
   In a separate development, Afghan officials on Tuesday said the Afghan
   government  will  send more than 1,000 police officers to the southern
   city of Kandahar.
   The  announcement  followed a series of coordinated suicide attacks by
   the Taliban that killed at least 35 people Saturday.
   The Taliban called the attacks a warning to NATO's top commander, U.S.
   General   Stanley   McChrystal,   who   is  planning  the  next  major
   anti-Taliban offensive in the region.
   In  violence  Tuesday,  NATO said a roadside bombing killed two of its
   soldiers  in  southern Afghanistan.  The alliance did not give details
   of the attack or the soldiers' nationalities.
