Officials say the operation targeted Taliban safe houses in the Orakzai tribal area believed to be used by local commanders. It is unclear if the strikes killed any senior militant leaders. Pakistan suffered a wave of suicide attacks last week, with some 13 people killed in the eastern city Lahore on Monday, another 55 people killed in coordinated attacks in the city on Friday, and 13 people killed in a suicide blast in Swat valley on Saturday. Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for the attacks. Pakistani officials say the militants often plan their operations from strongholds in the country's western tribal areas. Militants say the bombings against government buildings and police in Pakistan's cities are retaliation for the ongoing military offensives against the Taliban in the tribal areas. On Saturday a Taliban spokesman said more attacks will be carried out unless Pakistan's army stops operations in the tribal areas.
