Biden in Kenya to Discuss Political Reforms VOA News 08 June 2010 U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is in Kenya where he will meet Tuesday with the country's leaders, President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga, to discuss political and economic reforms, as well as progress on the new Kenyan constitution. Biden is also scheduled during his 3-day visit to deliver a major speech underscoring the importance the United States places on its relationship with Kenya. Kenya is the homeland of U.S. President Barack Obama's father. Mr. Obama has promised to visit the country before he leaves office. The United States has pressured Kenya to move forward with political reforms promised after more than 1,000 people were killed in violence triggered by a disputed presidential election in 2007. Biden also will address shared interests in peace and stability in West Africa, particularly in Sudan and Somalia.  This is the second stop on Biden's 3-country tour of Africa, culminating Friday in South Africa, where he will represent the United States at the opening ceremony of the World Cup football (soccer) tournament. Monday, Biden met in Egypt with President Hosni Mubarak discussing the problems facing the residents of the Gaza Strip. Biden said the Obama administration is consulting not only with Egypt but with other U.S. partners on new ways to address the "humanitarian, economic, security and political aspects" of the situation in Gaza. Israel continues to maintain a blockade of Gaza imposed by Israel and Egypt three years ago after Hamas took control of the territory. Last week, after Israel's bloody interception of an international aid flotilla heading for Gaza, Mr. Mubarak opened Egypt's Rafah crossing to allow humanitarian aid into the coastal strip. Also on the agenda for the Mubarak-Biden meeting were the indirect peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, and international concerns about Iran's nuclear program. .
