Federal and state authorities say the two men were arrested Saturday night at John F. Kennedy International Airport. They are identified as Mohamed Hamoud Alessa, 20, and Carlos Eduardo Almonte, 26. Officials say the suspects, who are both U.S. citizens, were preparing to board separate flights to Egypt. From there, they allegedly planned to make their way to Somalia to join the militant group al-Shabab. Alessa and Almonte have been charged with conspiring to commit an act of international terrorism. Federal and state authorities say the two men have been under investigation for several years. They are scheduled to appear in a federal court on Monday. Al-Shabab is trying to topple the U.N.-backed government of Somalia and turn the country into a strict Islamic state. The group is on the U.S. government's list of designated terrorist organizations.
