Officials: Some Oil in US Spill Collected VOA News 06 June 2010 US Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen (r) and White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, 24 May 2010 Photo: AP US Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen (r) and White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, 24 May 2010 U.S. officials say a cap placed over the gushing oil well in the Gulf of Mexico may be collecting about one-third of the flow of crude. Retired Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, who is leading the U.S. government's response, says the cap collected about 6,000 barrels of oil from the leaking well in the first 24 hours after it was put in place. Energy giant BP, which is responsible for the spill, estimates that roughly 19,000 barrels are escaping from the well each day. President Barack Obama says he will do what he can to help people recover from losing their livelihoods in the disaster. Mr. Obama visited Louisiana Friday for his third trip to the Gulf Coast region since the spill began in April. He has said despite some progress in containing the oil, the leak will not stop until BP finishes drilling relief wells, which are expected to be completed in August. Mr. Obama also says BP will pay "every single dime" owed to the people in the Gulf Coast region. The government has sent BP a $69 million bill for costs relating to the spill to date. The enormous spill has spread throughout the Gulf, covering birds and other wildlife, and threatens to devastate the region's fishing industry. .
